Step 1: compare the same exterior
Start by putting skins on equal terms. A Factory New copy of one skin next to a Battle‑Scarred copy of another tells you nothing about the designs. The picture on each skin page shows the skin in the best exterior it can have, so a skin that starts at Field‑Tested is shown in Field‑Tested. When you compare specific copies, compare them in the same exterior.
Check the float range too. If one skin can't reach the exterior you want, there is no point comparing at that level. The AWP | Asiimov, for example, starts at Field‑Tested, while the AK-47 | Bloodsport never reaches Battle‑Scarred. The exteriors guide explains these limits.
Step 2: look at the parts you'll actually see
Catalog images show the weapon from the side. In a match you see it from the first-person angle, where some parts dominate:
- Rifles: the top of the receiver, the handguard and the magazine.
- Pistols: the top of the slide. On the USP-S, also the suppressor.
- Knives: the blade, mostly from one side.
- Gloves: the back of the hand and the fingers.
A design that puts its best artwork on the stock, like many AWP skins, may look plainer in a match than in the catalog. Use the inspect view in the game or real screenshots to check those angles.
Step 3: check where wear shows first
Wear is uneven. Light colours and exposed edges change first, dark and busy areas hide it. Some useful contrasts:
- The white body of the P90 | Asiimov gets covered in grime at Battle‑Scarred, while the all-black AK-47 | Slate barely changes.
- The red paint of the M9 Bayonet | Crimson Web wears down to bare steel.
- On the USP-S | Neo-Noir the suppressor changes far more than the slide.
- The light leather of the Driver Gloves | King Snake turns yellowish, while the fabric of the Hand Wraps | Cobalt Skulls only fades a little.
If the part you care about is light, compare lower exteriors. If it's dark or patterned, a worn copy may look almost the same as a clean one.
Step 4: account for float inside the exterior
An exterior is a range, not a fixed look. A Field‑Tested copy near 0.15 and one near 0.38 can look noticeably different, especially on light designs. When you compare two specific items rather than two skins in general, compare their exact floats. The float guide explains how to read them.
Step 5: check pattern and phase
On some finishes, the pattern number changes the look more than wear does. That's true for Case Hardened, Fade, Marble Fade, Crimson Web and Doppler finishes. Two copies of the Karambit | Case Hardened can look like different skins. For Dopplers, first check the phase, since each phase has its own colours, then the pattern. The market name doesn't include the phase, so always look at a picture of the specific copy. The patterns guide covers this.
Step 6: remember the extras
- StatTrak™ adds a kill counter to the gun model, visible in first-person view. Some people like it, some find it distracting.
- Souvenir items carry tournament stickers that change the look of that specific copy.
The StatTrak and Souvenir guide explains both.
Step 7: use the same lighting
Metallic and candy finishes, like the AWP | Lightning Strike or Doppler knives, look lighter or darker depending on light. Screenshots from different maps or different settings aren't a fair comparison. Compare images taken under similar conditions, or use the catalog images, which are rendered the same way for every skin.
Step 8: think about the whole set
Your knife and gloves are on screen together, and your main weapons appear next to them in every round. Matching colours, or deliberately contrasting them, often matters more than any single skin. The selections can help: red skins, blue skins, black and white and knife and glove pairs.
Quick checklist
- Same exterior on both skins, within each skin's float range.
- Parts you'll see in first-person view.
- Where wear shows first on each design.
- Exact float, if you're comparing specific items.
- Pattern and phase on finishes where they matter.
- StatTrak™ counter or Souvenir stickers.
- Same lighting.
- How it fits with your knife, gloves and other weapons.
